On 8 July, 72 members of the European Parliament signed a letter demanding that Gianni Infantino be investigated.

Their complaint: the FIFA president had complied with a demand from Donald Trump to overturn the World Cup red card for US striker Folarin Balogun.

Their demand: that FIFA’s own Ethics Committee open proceedings against him for breaching the political neutrality his office requires.

“In light of the decision taken on Sunday to suspend the implementation of an automatic one-match suspension, we feel that it is time for European Football Associations, all of whom are member associations of FIFA, to intervene and ask that FIFA investigate the aforementioned decision-making processes,” they wrote.

It is one of the most concerted moves any European institution has made against a sitting FIFA president.
