Paris paid for it.</p><p>By the time Laurent Nu&#241;ez, the Interior Minister, faced the cameras on the morning of 31 May, the national bill was <a href="https://www.france24.com/en/france/20260531-more-than-280-arrested-in-paris-as-clashes-erupt-on-psg-victory-night">890 people arrested, 480 of them in the Paris area, and 57 police and gendarmes injured</a>. One man was dead, killed in a motocross accident on the edge of the celebrations.</p><p> The Paris prosecutor logged roughly half the charges as being for assault on police. Splinter groups had, in the prefecture&#8217;s own word, <a href="https://www.theweek.in/news/world/2026/05/31/psgs-champions-league-win-marred-by-violent-riots-and-mass-arrests-in-paris.html">&#8220;systematically&#8221;</a> torched cars, looted shops and lit fires across the city. A bakery and a restaurant near the Parc des Princes were left structurally damaged. A crowd tried to storm a police station in the 8th arrondissement. The ring road encircling the city was briefly blockaded before tactical units cleared it.</p><p>It was, almost to the letter, a rerun. A year earlier, PSG&#8217;s first Champions League title had produced a worse night: <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2025_Paris_Saint-Germain_celebration_riots">two dead, around 192 injured, more than 500 arrested and 264 vehicles burned</a>. The 2026 arrest count was <a href="https://www.cnews.fr/france/2026-05-31/sacre-du-psg-780-interpellations-en-france-en-hausse-de-32-par-rapport-2025">up 32% on that</a>. Two summers, two trophies, two near-identical nights of disorder in the same streets.</p><p>The reason this should not be reported as a shock is that nobody involved treated it as one. The violence was prepared for, in detail, on both sides of the barricade.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" They were denied in the 98th minute, when their own keeper Bento <a href="https://www.aljazeera.com/sports/2026/5/13/ronaldos-al-nassr-kept-waiting-for-saudi-pro-league-title-by-own-goal">collided with I&#241;igo Mart&#237;nez</a> and shovelled the ball into his own net. The Riyadh Region Police and the Ministry of Sport issued a <a href="https://dora.sa/478545/">joint statement</a>, confirming that several people had been arrested after the brawl. </p><p>The main story being broadcast on Saudi social media is that an Al Nassr supporter in one of the VIP boxes tried to <a href="https://dailysports.net/news/tensions-run-high-al-nassr-fans-storm-al-hilal-supporters-section-and-spark-stick-wielding-brawl/">wrench an Al Hilal flag</a> out of a rival&#8217;s hands. The collapse of Al Nassr&#8217;s title celebration in stoppage time only fueled matters further.</p><div id="youtube2-phxRs4LFq7I" class="youtube-wrap" data-attrs="{&quot;videoId&quot;:&quot;phxRs4LFq7I&quot;,&quot;startTime&quot;:null,&quot;endTime&quot;:null}" data-component-name="Youtube2ToDOM"><div class="youtube-inner"><iframe src="https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/phxRs4LFq7I?rel=0&amp;autoplay=0&amp;showinfo=0&amp;enablejsapi=0" frameborder="0" loading="lazy" gesture="media" allow="autoplay; fullscreen" allowautoplay="true" allowfullscreen="true" width="728" height="409"></iframe></div></div><h3><em><strong>Why is there a rivalry between Al-Nassr and Al-Hilal?</strong></em></h3>

During the AFCON final on January 18, Senegal left the field due to what they feel was bias towards Morocco before returning and winning the trophy. CAF ruled this was grounds to grant the title to Morocco, annd Senegal has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. </p><p>The basics: the walkoff, the title being stripped, Senegal&#8217;s CAS appeal have been widely covered. What has not been covered with equal rigour is everything around them: the hidden internal instruction that nearly threw the match out entirely, the fans still sitting in a Moroccan prison, the betting firms that paid out twice because they had no other option, and a host nation whose showcase tournament has left a legacy more complicated than its stadiums deserved. </p><p>The Sports and Crime Briefing goes through seven points that may have been missed.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!vSCo!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F06c08053-801d-45a4-b3b0-f3010c3092e4_6016x4016.jpeg" data-component-name="Image2ToDOM"><div class="image2-inset"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!vSCo!,w_424,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F06c08053-801d-45a4-b3b0-f3010c3092e4_6016x4016.jpeg 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!vSCo!,w_848,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F06c08053-801d-45a4-b3b0-f3010c3092e4_6016x4016.jpeg 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!vSCo!,w_1272,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F06c08053-801d-45a4-b3b0-f3010c3092e4_6016x4016.jpeg 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!vSCo!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F06c08053-801d-45a4-b3b0-f3010c3092e4_6016x4016.jpeg 1456w" sizes="100vw"><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!vSCo!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F06c08053-801d-45a4-b3b0-f3010c3092e4_6016x4016.jpeg" width="1456" height="972" data-attrs="{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/06c08053-801d-45a4-b3b0-f3010c3092e4_6016x4016.jpeg&quot;,&quot;srcNoWatermark&quot;:null,&quot;fullscreen&quot;:null,&quot;imageSize&quot;:null,&quot;height&quot;:972,&quot;width&quot;:1456,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:null,&quot;bytes&quot;:null,&quot;alt&quot;:&quot;File:C&#233;l&#233;bration S&#233;n&#233;gal (29).jpg - But the conspiracy may have gone far beyond the federation.</p><p>FIFA upheld sanctions announced in September. FAM was fined over $430,000 and the seven players involved were banned from football for 12 months. FIFA&#8217;s investigation found that birth certificates for the players&#8217; grandparents had been falsified, a violation of the rules governing player eligibility. </p><p>This scandal centers on FIFA&#8217;s so-called &#8220;grandfather rule,&#8221; which allows a player to represent a country if a parent or grandparent was born there (or if the player has lived in that country for a certain number of years). Malaysia used this rule to invent family histories for players in order to fast-track their eligibility for the national team.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!JKUX!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fe54524bb-2bcf-4286-887f-180b8cba5958_873x524.jpeg" data-component-name="Image2ToDOM"><div class="image2-inset"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!JKUX!,w_424,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fe54524bb-2bcf-4286-887f-180b8cba5958_873x524.jpeg 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!JKUX!,w_848,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fe54524bb-2bcf-4286-887f-180b8cba5958_873x524.jpeg 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!JKUX!,w_1272,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fe54524bb-2bcf-4286-887f-180b8cba5958_873x524.jpeg 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!JKUX!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fe54524bb-2bcf-4286-887f-180b8cba5958_873x524.jpeg 1456w" sizes="100vw"><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!JKUX!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fe54524bb-2bcf-4286-887f-180b8cba5958_873x524.jpeg" width="873" height="524" data-attrs="{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/e54524bb-2bcf-4286-887f-180b8cba5958_873x524.jpeg&quot;,&quot;srcNoWatermark&quot;:null,&quot;fullscreen&quot;:null,&quot;imageSize&quot;:null,&quot;height&quot;:524,&quot;width&quot;:873,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:null,&quot;bytes&quot;:null,&quot;alt&quot;:&quot;Malaysia face potential 0-3 defeat punishment if found using illegal naturalized players in win against Vietnam -
