Coordinated with Europol, INTERPOL, and UEFA’s Anti-Match-Fixing Unit, the operation was the largest police intervention in the history of Czech football.

Within 48 hours, 32 individuals had been formally charged. Within a week, four were in pretrial detention and 47 disciplinary proceedings had been launched against players, referees, and clubs.

Two days after the raids, the Czech national team walked out at the Letná Stadium in Prague to face the Republic of Ireland in a World Cup play-off semi-final. They won on penalties. A week after that, they beat Denmark on penalties too.

For the first time since 2006, Czechia was heading to a World Cup, while its domestic football system imploded beneath it.

And yet the conditions that led to these arrests largely remains in place. They stopped an entire division mid-season and later wiped it from the calendar after concluding that more than half its games were fixed.

Liga Alef North, the country’s third tier, was shut down.

At the top of the corrupted table sat FC Kiryat Yam, a modest club from the city of Haifa. Despite its leading position, investigators found no proof Kiryat Yam was involved in the match-fixing fiasco.

When the league was shut down, the Israel Football Association (IFA) promoted the club to the second‑tier National League on the merits of its clean track record.

On January 26, that redemption arc collapsed.

Israeli police arrested 17 players and senior officials from Kiryat Yam after a months‑long undercover operation, alleging that a criminal organisation had used the club for three years to fix matches and launder millions of dollars through The match-fixer of today is a network architect, fluent in crypto, data obfuscation, and betting algorithms. But his greatest rivals are no longer sports federations but organized crime prosecutors.

Nowhere is that transformation clearer than in France. Arrests made this week as part of a multi-country investigation have helped to show match-fixers adapting like engineers, and law enforcement learning how to best hunt them.

Dhoni filed a lawsuit for defamation in Madras, India, against everyone he claimed had unjustly labelled him as a match-fixer. The list of culprits extended from major media company, Zee Media, the News Nation channel, journalist Sudhir Chaudhary, and retired police officer, G. Sampath Kumar.

Dhoni claimed that this group had unfairly associated his name with the Indian Premier League’s (IPL) 2013 betting and match-fixing scandal.

On August 11, 2025, after more than a decade of procedural delays, the Madras High Court decided that Dhoni’s lawsuit would go to trial. During his team’s two-year ban, Dhoni was allowed to continue his career in Pune before returning to CSK.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

M.S. Dhoni playing for Chennai Super Kings. Source: Press Trust of India

Yet in the frenzied media atmosphere of early 2014, Dhoni claims his name and reputation were tarnished by “false and malicious” reports.

The police officer, Kumar, had been one of those investigating the betting racket and testified before the Mudgal Committee, a judicial panel probing the IPL scandal.

The spark was a series of “false and malicious” media reports in February 2014, which Dhoni alleges were aimed at tarnishing him. Suspended Tamil Nadu police officer G. Sampath Kumar had investigated a betting racket and deposed before the Mudgal Committee (a Supreme Court-appointed panel probing the IPL scandal).

Kumar’s statements indicated bookmakers had mentioned Dhoni's involvement. This allegation gained traction in February 2014 when India Today published extracts of Kumar’s deposition. Kumar had claimed that Dhoni had prior knowledge of the plans to fix IPL matches and had been directly approached to participate in the plot.

In subsequent days, Zee News, then-anchored by Sudhir Chaudhary, and News Nation aired debates and reports built around these allegations. But according to Dhoni’s suit, the media coverage painted a picture of him being complicit in his team’s wrongdoing. This, his lawyers wrote, “devastated [his] reputation and image in the eyes of millions of fans” and made him “an object of hate and ridicule to the general public.”

Did it?

That’s very subjective.

Prior to the IPL scandal, Dhoni was already an icon in India. Earning the moniker “Captain Cool,” he had led the Indian cricket team to victory in the 2007 T20 World Cup, the 2011 Cricket World Cup, and the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy. He won the IPL five times with Chennai Super Kings, twice before the scandal, and three times after.

No brands or endorsements dropped him and he continued to have the support of India’s cricket establishment and his teammates.

He was inducted into India’s Cricket Hall of Fame in June 2025.

But Dhoni described intense personal trauma and stress, describing this period as “the most difficult phase of my life” in an interview.

His reputation was likely bolstered by early judicial support for his case. In March 2014, Justice S. Tamilvanan found merit in Dhoni’s complaint and granted an interim injunction restraining Zee and News Nation from publishing or broadcasting any content linking Dhoni to the scandal.

“I am of the view that there is a prima facie case and the balance of convenience is in favour of the plaintiff,” the judge observed.

Why has there been such a long stalemate then?

The accused media firms did not back down quietly. Zee Media publicly rebutted Dhoni’s allegations, arguing they never intended to malign the cricketer and that they were merely reporting information in the public domain.

The channel pointed out that, by February 2014, Dhoni had not been officially exonerated yet and that the scandal was still under investigation. Their filings claimed that Dhoni was trying to “gag the media” and that Kumar’s testimony naming Dhoni was published by other outlets and corroborated by the police officer on television. Essentially, Zee’s stance was that they reported on allegations without declaring Dhoni guilty, and that a public figure like him should endure such discussion until cleared. News Nation took a similar line.

The ensuing courtroom chess match stalled the case for years. The defendants filed a slew of challenges, questions, and objections that kept the suit entangled in procedural knots.

For example, Kumar, the police officer, took seven years to file his written statement of defense.

But a unique twist came when Kumar finally did so. In his statement, he brought up new allegations, including that Indian courts had suppressed evidence in favour of Dhoni.

The cricket captain promptly slapped Kumar with a criminal contempt petition. In late 2023, the Madras High Court found Kumar guilty of contempt, sentencing him to 15 days in jail.

<picture><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!Veiv!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Ff447d371-5021-495a-b119-4edfa2a2c4a1_1278x720.jpeg" width="1278" height="720" data-attrs="{"src":"https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/f447d371-5021-495a-b119-4edfa2a2c4a1_1278x720.jpeg","srcNoWatermark":null,"fullscreen":null,"imageSize":null,"height":720,"width":1278,"resizeWidth":null,"bytes":117367,"alt":"IPS officer Sampath Kumar who got clean chit in IPL betting scam gets posting | Chennai News - He even affirmed in August that he would personally take the stand and would be available for examination and cross-examination between October and December 2025.

To avoid the media frenzy this would cause, Justice C.V. Karthikeyan, the judge in charge of the case, appointed an advocate-commissioner to record the cricketer’s testimony at a secure location.

The trial is set to happen later this year.

Is there precedent for such defamation trials over match-fixing claims?

Two main ones in cricket.

India’s first World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev faced match-fixing accusations at the turn of the millennium. A former teammate, Manoj Prabhakar, and others alleged Dev had offered bribes to fix a match in 1994. In response, Dev vehemently denied the claims and even announced plans to file a ₹10 crore defamation suit (₹100 million) against the accusers, including ex-cricket official I.S. Bindra and news outlet CNN, which aired Bindra’s interview. An inquiry cleared Dev’s name and the lawsuit was dropped.

New Zealand all-rounder Chris Cairns also took on a prominent accuser in court and won in 2012. In 2010, IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi publicly alleged on Twitter that Cairns had fixed matches in a 2008 cricket league. Cairns sued Modi for libel in the High Court of England, and won £90,000 in damages in 2012 after the court ruled that Modi “singularly failed” to back up his match-fixing claims with evidence.

Fittingly, the judge in that case noted how an unfounded charge of match-fixing “entirely destroys” a player’s reputation.

The Complete Guide to the Premier League's Betting Sponsors, Team by Team

In a year, gambling companies will be banned from front-of-shirt sponsorships to the Premier League. serious organized crime cases, related to drug cartels, human trafficking rings, and major fraud. This law means they can now take charge of complex sports corruption cases.

The Sports and Crime Briefing brings you positive advancements in the fight against match-fixing. This meant that match-fixing was quickly targeted by criminal groups as a way to both generate huge profits and launder money with limited risk.

Prosecutors, in France and elsewhere, were a step behind, as they relied on relatively weak legal tools. The new law changes that equation by handing jurisdiction to the JIRS.

The JIRS, France’s interregional organized crime courts, have a track record of managing complex international investigations, such as the fallout from Operation Trident, which saw French police officers accused of collaborating with Colombian traffickers.

There are eight JIRS based across France, staffed by seasoned prosecutors and judges trained in dismantling elaborate criminal networks, from drug cartels to financial fraud schemes.

Previously, match-fixing cases would likely be handled by local courts. These would soon stutter if the scope of the case extended. Now, JIRS can target the entire network behind the fix, not just the small fry, handling the investigation, indictments and trials.

Even before the law was passed, JIRS prosecutors ) have been trained to recognize and pursue sports manipulation cases, anticipating this reform.

“We have been very much pioneers in training JIRS magistrates on these issues, particularly with the Paris and Marseille prosecutors’ offices,” Corentin Segalen, coordinator of the French national platform against sports manipulation, told the Sports and Crime Briefing.

“France is one of the only countries to now have a police unit specialized in the fight against match-fixing,” he added.

So what new toys do they get to use?

Previously, French investigators looking at match-fixing were limited to traditional techniques, such as interviews and reviewing betting data. While always useful, this may be of limited use under a determined criminal conspiracy.

Match-fixers, like any savvy crminals, communicate in code, use burner phones, and operate via intermediaries. This has made it very difficult to prove intent and complicity in high-profile match-fixing cases.

The new law directly addresses this gap.

According to the French Senate’s report on the law, investigators can now use phone taps, ambient listening devices, beacon tracking, surveillance of suspects, and even infiltration by undercover officers. Such measures were previously reserved for crimes like drug trafficking, terrorism, or major financial crimes, due to their intrusive nature.

What about on the punishment side?

The bribery of sporting officials or players was already illegal in France, but the sanctions were modest. At worse, this represented short imprisonment terms and fines of up to €75,000 under the general corruption framework.

The 2025 reform introduced a new aggravated offense of sports corruption committed as an organized group. If prosecutors can show that a manipulation was carried out by a structured group, which is likely for match-fixing, culprits will be punished under “organized crime corruption.”

This could lead to sentences of up to ten years in prison and fines of up to €1 million, or twice the amount of illicit profits from the fix.

“It’s a response proportionate to the threat,” noted the Senate Law Commission.

How long has this taken?

France has long been an early mover in this space. It regulated online betting in 2010 and created one of the first national platforms against sports competition manipulation in 2016, as well as ratifying the Macolin Convention in 2023.

Training and awareness have also been a big part of this groundwork. Jean-Yves Lourgouilloux, president of the international MARS network of sports prosecutors, has spearheaded efforts to educate French magistrates about sports integrity threats. The National School for the Judiciary (École Nationale de la Magistrature) also has specific modules on sports competition manipulation in its training programs for judges and prosecutors.

The case against Paquetá centered on four matches between late 2022 and mid-2023 in which he received yellow cards. In plain terms, Paquetá was cleared of having intentionally been booked to benefit bettors. The commission did not find sufficient proof that Paquetá had sought to influence those matches improperly.

For Paquetá, this was a vindication. “Since the first day of this investigation, I have maintained my innocence against these extremely serious accusations,” he said in a relieved statement.

It’s worth noting that Paquetá did not escape all disciplinary action. The Commission found him guilty of two minor breaches of Rule F3 for not fully cooperating with the investigation. However, that is a far lesser offense in context, carrying perhaps a fine or short suspension.

“Paquetá has been cleared of spot-fixing but found to have breached the FA’s co-operation rules. That tells me the investigators couldn’t meet the evidential bar for fixing and lacked the leverage to compel fuller co-operation, despite Paquetá denying wrongdoing from day one,” said Affy Sheikh, former head of integrity services at Starlizard.

So what would have potentially been one of the biggest corruption scandals in Premier League history concluded with Paquetá exonerated.

But is this type of verdict unusual?

No. Around the same time Paquetá was enduring his ordeal in England, Nigerian goalkeeper Maduka Okoye found himself in an analogous predicament in Italy.

In March 2024, Okoye was playing for Udinese in a Serie A match against Lazio when he received a yellow card for time-wasting in the second half. A goalkeeper being booked for running down the clock is nothing extraordinary, but Italian authorities were alerted to a rush of suspicious bets specifically wagering that Okoye would get a yellow card in that match.

And similarly to Paquetá, a large number of them came from in and around Udine, the city of Okoye’s club. At odds of roughly 8-to-1, the payouts for Okoye’s booking were significant – reportedly totaling over €120,000 in winnings if all bets paid out.

By June 2025, Okoye had been formally charged with sporting fraud alongside three acquaintances who were linked to the suspicious bets. Had Okoye been found guilty, he could have been banned up for up to four years.

But, just prior to the Paquetá verdict, Okoye was also cleared of all match-fixing charges. Authorities determined that Okoye had no part in a deliberate scheme to engineer his booking.

Okoye also got off with a minor two-month ban for violating the “generic principle of fairness.” Italian media characterized this as a punishment for “illegal betting” involvement in a broad sense, rather than match-fixing. In effect, the authorities concluded that something improper had occurred around Okoye, perhaps among his friends or associates, but that he himself did not intentionally manipulate the match.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

Maduka Okoye. Source: Nigeria national team

So their friends bet on them, but they didn’t know?

To an outside observer, it might strain credulity that a player’s close friends or family would bet on a very specific outcome (like a yellow card) without the player’s involvement. But the possibility of it being coincidental or done without the player’s consent had to be considered, and that was enough to introduce reasonable doubt.

In both cases, integrity monitors and prosecutors had circumstantial evidence of something fishy: betting patterns that defied normal explanation and pointed to associates of the players. What was missing, however, was the direct proof that the players knowingly colluded in those bets. No incontrovertible communications, no confessed quid pro quo, no “smoking gun”.

In the face of these serious charges, Paquetá assembled a strong defense team, led by renowned sports lawyer Nick De Marco. This team provided alternative explanations for the suspicious patterns.

One key argument was that Paquetá is naturally a combative, foul-prone player, essentially suggesting that the bets on him being booked might have been made simply because bettors knew he often gets carded, not because he was ensuring it deliberately.

To support this, his lawyers presented data showing Paquetá’s consistently high number of fouls and bookings throughout his career. They even demonstrated that he “has consistently conceded more free-kicks than his teammates,” implying a higher baseline probability of being booked in any given game. In other words, the defense contended that what the FA saw as a corruption red flag could just be a gambler’s calculation on a naturally aggressive player, rather than the result of a fix.

Perhaps most persuasively, Paquetá’s team brought in evidence about his conduct around one of the flagged games, which happened on August 12, 2023. Paquetá testified he had asked not to be played in that match because he was on the verge of a transfer to Man City and didn’t want to risk injury or any complications.

West Ham manager Moyes supported Paquetá’s claim, indicating the player was reluctant to participate in the game, a stance seemingly at odds with someone planning to get himself booked intentionally. Indeed, Paquetá did end up playing and got a yellow for persistent fouling in that match, but the context of him trying to avoid playing at all bolstered his argument that the booking was not premeditated.

What are the long-term ramifications of this?

While Paquetá and Okoye avoided being branded match-fixers, their cases highlight a number of pitfalls and issues that can arise in integrity investigations:

Cross-Jurisdictional Evidence Challenges: Paquetá’s case showed the difficulty of investigating betting activity in another country. The FA had to rely on cooperation with Brazilian bookmakers and for authorities to trace those bets to Paquetá Island. Any lapses in data sharing, privacy laws, or unavailability of witnesses abroad can leave holes in the evidence.

Extended Uncertainty and Career Impact: One major aspect “gone wrong” here was the sheer length of these processes. Paquetá’s inquiry stretched across nearly two years, severely impacting his career opportunities, including a major transfer to Manchester City, and subjecting him to public suspicion without resolution. West Ham’s management was reportedly frustrated with the FA’s slow proceedings and even considered legal action for the delay.

Alternate Explanations and Defense Strategies: Another reason these charges fell apart is that the players’ defense teams provided alternative interpretations of the events that the adjudicators found credible or at least possible. The moment you introduce reasonable doubt about why something happened, it’s hard to conclusively label it a fix.

For example, the fouls that earned Paquetá’s yellow cards (a late challenge, a shirt-pull, a handball, etc.) were argued to be products of his normal “carelessness” on the pitch. These are football actions that could happen in any game, not bizarre actions that scream of a fix. In Okoye’s scenario, a keeper wasting time when leading is a common tactic; many goalkeepers take cautions to burn seconds off the clock. So while the betting pattern made it suspicious, the act itself is routine enough that it doesn’t irrefutably prove malintent.

Partial Punishments when Full Proof Lacking: Sports authorities often use lesser charges as a fallback when full match-fixing can’t be proven. We saw the FA do this with Paquetá (charging him under F3 for non-compliance) and FIGC with Okoye (Article 4 fairness violation).

This approach can be controversial. Some argue it’s a face-saving move by authorities (“we know something was fishy, so we’ll punish something”), while others see it as just holding players accountable to professional standards even if they escape the worst charge. On February 10, 2025, ten Turrialba players were summoned to the team’s new clubhouse. Club president, José Rolando Pereira, was waiting for them with two Mexican staff members appointed only a day earlier, sporting director Ernesto de la Torre and head coach Enrique Valencia. The trio promised each player $300 if they agreed to lose that evening’s league match against Cariari by a specific pre-arranged score.

This ham-fisted attempt at bribery immediately backfired. Those present rebuffed the bribe and left outraged. Bryan Cordero, Turrialba’s captain and goalkeeper, activated the confidential “Red Button” application – a secure reporting app run by the global players’ union, FIFPro.

“What we have declared is the truth... I did the right thing, I feel at peace. I was left without a job, I was fired, but I do have peace,” Cordero told the press.

Turrialba played the game as planned against Cariari and lost 2-1. Two days later, Pereira, de la Torre, and Valencia made a rather desperate attempt to hide their crime. Turrialba’s players were called into another meeting where the trio claimed that the bribe offer “had only been a test of trust,” which the squad had supposedly passed by refusing it.

This didn’t work, the fix had already been reported and Cordero was fired from the team soon after.

On July 8, 2025, the Costa Rica football federation (FCPF) banned the three men from footballing activities for five years.

What was the prior case?

In late 2023, FIFA’s betting fraud detection systems flagged suspicious patterns in the matches of another Costa Rican second-division side, Puerto Golfito FC. An FCPF investigation found that the club’s three main officials, including its president, majority shareholder, and sporting director, had conspired to fix matches throughout the season.

Again, the report came from within the club as players and staff were aware of the crime.

“We received a complaint from some players and people from the Golfito FC team, and we had to act and file a complaint with the FIFA Integrity Officer,” explained Sergio Hidalgo, president of the Liga de Ascenso.

The punishment was harsher: Puerto Golfito FC was kicked out of the league for a decade, and the three men involved were banned from football for the same length of time.

How common is this scheme?

Scratch under the surface of many leagues and you’ll hear a chorus of fan complaints about allegedly crooked owners. But actual prosecutable cases are quite rare. Some include the 2023-2024 purge in Chinese football, which jailed some of the country’s most prominent football executives, or the 2015 Catania case in Italy, where a team owner threw five games to avoid relegation to the third division.

However, a developing story from Australia appears to provide more wood for the fire.

In June 2025, Queensland police launched an investigation into allegations that players at Gold Coast United (a club in Australia’s second-tier National Premier League) were approached by individuals claiming to be Chinese investors. Source: Gold Coast United

These approaches came to light when a crucial league match – Gold Coast United versus Moreton Bay – was abruptly called off due to integrity concerns. Club officials had been made aware that representatives of a Chinese company had attempted to recruit players to manipulate on-field events. It is unclear what exact scenario the fixers were pushing for – whether they wanted the team to deliberately lose, players to incur intentional yellow cards, or other in-game actions – but it was clear their goal was to rig outcomes for betting profits. Once again, the targeted players rejected the illicit overtures and instead alerted authorities.

But the story wasn’t finished yet.

Investigators later obtained a covert recording of a meeting between a purported investor and a player, which provided chilling insight into the scheme. In the recording, the fixer bluntly tells the player, “We’ll show you how to do it,” as he outlines how to execute the match-fix. The player, who had wisely documented the encounter and kept notes of who he met and when, turned this evidence over to police.

This Gold Coast case reveals a less common modus operandi: match-fixers attempting to embed themselves within a club’s hierarchy by pretending to inject money.

Prosecutors’ Favourite Trick - When Does Illegal Betting Become Sports Fraud?

Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye is the latest player to see charges escalating from illegal betting to sports fraud. While such tips have repeatedly played a role in match-fixing investigations down the years, how useful are they?

In late 2024, an email from a mysterious sender in Europe landed in the Mexican Football Federation’s inbox. Attached was a video showing players from second-division clubs Real Apodaca FC and Correcaminos UAT huddled with known gamblers, openly negotiating how to fix upcoming matches.

This single anonymous tip – delivered via a confidential “Juego Limpio” (Fair Play) whistleblower channel – set off a chain reaction. Betting monitors soon confirmed irregular wagering on the clubs’ games, and investigators swept in. By February 2025, the federation’s disciplinary committee handed out 57 years of bans to seven players implicated in the scheme, some of the harshest sanctions in Mexican football history. The Real Apodaca scandal, once invisible, had been blown into the open by a nameless informant.

You can read our full report on that case here.

The Sports and Crime Briefing is the leading publication investing how organized crime is entering professional sports around the world. This case, too, began with anonymous whistleblower leaks. In April 2025, explosive evidence surfaced publicly alleging that multiple Mazatlán players had conspired to fix matches in the ongoing Clausura 2025 tournament. Leaked audios, videos, images, and emails were anonymously posted on social media, apparently confirming a fix in at least one game: an 8-0 loss by Mazatlán to Chivas on February 2, 2025.

At least one of the emails came from a bet monitoring manager at betting firm 1xBet who alerted the FMF that an unusual volume of money (between $70,000 and $100,000) was bet against Mazatlán within a five-minute span before that Chivas match. coaches, betting company employees, or others - have popped up over the years, often leading to decisive reveals.

Huracán Melilla vs. Levante (Spain, 2021) – In Spain, an anonymous tip-off to La Liga’s integrity hotline concerned a Copa del Rey match. In December 2021, fifth-tier club Huracán Melilla lost 0–8 at home to top-division Levante. Such a blowout didn’t initially draw attention, given the mismatch in terms of skill. But over a year later, La Liga received a confidential tip alleging the game had been fixed. The league swiftly passed the information to law enforcement. By early 2023, a magistrate in Melilla had formally opened an investigation into possible match-fixing in that cup tie.

Importantly, Levante was cleared of wrongdoing – the focus fell on Huracán Melilla’s side of the match. Details of the probe haven’t been fully released, but the whistleblower’s report through La Liga’s channel was the catalyst. Huracán Melilla disbanded in 2023.

Lucas Paquetá Scandal (Brazil/England, 2023) – Perhaps the highest-profile match-fixing investigation of recent years began with a furtive warning to Brazilian authorities from businessman Bruno Lopez. Lucas Paquetá, a star midfielder for West Ham United and the Brazilian national team, was accused of deliberately obtaining yellow cards in Premier League matches as part of a betting scheme.

Lopez came forward with financial evidence that Paquetá’s own uncle had allegedly sent five bank transfers – totaling around $16,000 – to a bettor, who then wagered on Paquetá getting booked in a specific match. The informant provided names, dates and amounts, implicating bets on Paquetá in an EPL game and even on another Brazilian player in Spain.

Armed with this tip, the English FA charged Paquetá with betting rule violations, and in Brazil he was summoned before a Senate committee on match-fixing. Although his FA trial is still ongoing, the Paquetá case shows how tipsters can divulge family and friend transactions.

Global Betting Syndicates in Tennis (2010s) – In tennis, some lower-ranked players have cooperated confidentially with the International Tennis Integrity Agency to unmask fixers. Marco Trungelliti, an Argentine journeyman, reported being repeatedly approached to fix matches starting in 2015 at the ATP tour level. He came forward with all the evidence, leading to bans on three of his national teammates. Yet, despite being praised by tennis authorities, Trungelliti said he was ostracised by much of the tour and forced to move abroad.

“It is not a moment in my life that I remember with happiness. Yes, the fact that I had the courage to open my mouth. But internally it was hard. I went into a certain depression,” he told the press. It was particularly galling to see Novak Djokovic and other top stars deny match-fixing was a reality at the top level. match-fixing approached to tennis authorities and testified against corrupt peers, contributing to multiple bans.

Trungelliti’s case is an important reminder of the retaliation, at times career-ending retaliation, that whistleblowers may face.

So are whistleblowers all that common in sport?

For match-fixing, whistleblowers can be an effective weapon but they seldom crop up.

“They don’t happen as frequently as people may think, and credible reports of this nature are hard to come by. Most sports have opened channels for anonymous reporting, but in my experience, participants just aren’t as forthcoming when it comes to reporting betting-related incidents in general,” explained Stephen Emberson, head of integrity intelligence and education, at Genius Sports.

Brazil, one of the countries with the highest rates of match-fixing alerts in the world, has seen no known whistleblower incidents, according to one of its foremost anti-match fixing experts.

“Brazil does not have a serious, effective, and secure channel to receive these kinds of revelations,” said Fred Justo, former coordinator of anti-money laundering monitoring at the country’s Ministry of Finance. “There is also no incentive for such whistleblowers to reach out to authorities. I don’t know of any anonymous tip reaching authorities like this.”

But do whistleblower revelations make an impact?

As seen in the two Mexico cases, such an anonymous tip can be the spark that powers an entire match-fixing investigation, but not every tip leads to action.

So what determines if a whistleblower’s information actually succeeds?

Quality and Credibility of Evidence

The most effective tips come with hard evidence or specific intel. For example, the Real Apodaca informant didn’t just allege foul play – they provided a video of players meeting with gamblers, a smoking gun that officials could scarcely ignore. Similarly, the Mazatlán whistleblower handed over betting timestamps and WhatsApp chats documenting the fix in progress. In contrast, a vague accusation with no details might be filed away or dismissed as a grudge.

Insider status bolsters credibility too. Tips from players or coaches with first-hand knowledge tend to carry more weight than rumors from a fan. In Spain, La Liga’s whistleblower system channels even anonymous reports through an integrity department that can assess their plausibility. When the Huracán Melilla tip arrived, La Liga found it credible enough to go to a magistrate – likely because the informant provided details that only an insider would know.

Follow-Up Capabilities

A tip is only as useful as the action it triggers. There is a wide gulf in the capacity of different sports and leagues to respond to this information.

“Some sports will really struggle to work through the information they get via whistleblowers or anonymous reporting, in relation to betting related corruption, because they have a lack of understanding or resource to do the additional work required,” explained Emberson.

Leagues and federations that have dedicated integrity units, data analysts, or partnerships with betting monitors can rapidly follow up on leads. In other words, Emberson argues, a whistleblower’s claim of a fix can often be corroborated (or refuted) by gambling patterns and player data – but only if such monitoring exists.

Volume and Specificity

Integrity hotlines can receive hundreds of messages, especially after scandals break. Not all will be useful, with most even being inflammatory. “Most sports have opened channels for anonymous reporting but you can only imagine what the inbox is filled with following some contentious refereeing decisions in a big game,” Emberson told the Sports and Crime Briefing.

However, tips that identify a specific match, incident, or person stand out. In Brazil’s “Maximum Penalty” case, the initial tip from a club owner focused on one match and one player, giving prosecutors a starting point.

In essence, whistleblower tips hit the mark when they are detailed, verifiable, and land in the hands of capable, willing investigators. When those pieces align – as they did in the cases above – the results can be spectacular.

But all too often, even well-intentioned warnings fade into obscurity.
