Why Elye Wahi Is Playing the World Cup While Suspected of Match-Fixing

The crossbar was still ringing when Elye Wahi turned away, hands on his head. Fifty-six minutes into Côte d’Ivoire’s World Cup opener against Ecuador, in front of a full house in Philadelphia, the striker had come within inches of scoring on his tournament debut. Côte d’Ivoire beat Ecuador 1-0 that afternoon of 14 June.

Wahi came off to applause, a France youth international who had switched to the country of his father. He had stalled at Eintracht Frankfurt, barely featuring in the Bundesliga, before a January loan to Nice revived him thanks to five goals in 14 games.

But two weeks before the applause in Philadelphia, Wahi was arrested in Marseille.

On 29 May, hours after he scored twice to keep Nice in the top flight, anti-corruption police detained him on suspicion of spot-fixing. He was questioned and released without charge, and the investigation remains open.

What they were looking at was not a thrown match or a bought result. It was a single yellow card, the kind of spot-fix we have covered closely before at the Sports and Crime Briefing, picked up in a goalless game against Metz on the final day of the French season.

What happened against Metz?

In the final round of the Ligue 1 season, Nice received Metz at home in the Allianz Riviera.

Metz had nothing left to play for. They had been relegated two natchdays earlier, bottom of the table and already down.

On the morning of 24 March 2026, officers from NCOZ (Czech National Centre Against Organised Crime) descended on dozens of addresses across Moravia just after 6am. Coordinated with Europol, INTERPOL, and UEFA’s Anti-Match-Fixing Unit, the operation was the largest police intervention in the history of Czech football.

Within 48 hours, 32 individuals had been formally charged. Within a week, four were in pretrial detention and 47 disciplinary proceedings had been launched against players, referees, and clubs.

Two days after the raids, the Czech national team walked out at the Letná Stadium in Prague to face the Republic of Ireland in a World Cup play-off semi-final. They won on penalties. A week after that, they beat Denmark on penalties too.

For the first time since 2006, Czechia was heading to a World Cup, while its domestic football system imploded beneath it.

And yet the conditions that led to these arrests largely remains in place. This scandal erupted because of the astounding work of the Czech FA’s (FAČR) integrity team, led by Kamil Javůrek, for the last three years.

In February 2025, Israel’s football authorities did something rarely attempted by any league around the world. They stopped an entire division mid-season and later wiped it from the calendar after concluding that more than half its games were fixed.

Liga Alef North, the country’s third tier, was shut down.

At the top of the corrupted table sat FC Kiryat Yam, a modest club from the city of Haifa. Despite its leading position, investigators found no proof Kiryat Yam was involved in the match-fixing fiasco.

When the league was shut down, the Israel Football Association (IFA) promoted the club to the second‑tier National League on the merits of its clean track record.

On January 26, that redemption arc collapsed.

Israeli police arrested 17 players and senior officials from Kiryat Yam after a months‑long undercover operation, alleging that a criminal organisation had used the club for three years to fix matches and launder millions of dollars through illegal betting in Israel and abroad.
